The battle for first place continues as the second place Binghamton Mets play in Reading against the Fightin Phils in a four-game series

The B-Mets needed to win at least three of these games to have a realistic shot at overtaking Reading for the top spot in the Eastern Division but dropped the first games to Reading 6-2.  The top two teams in each division qualify for the playoffs.  Trenton is in third place, eight games in back of Reading and four behind Binghamton.

The New York Mets gave Binghamton a gift by leaving Steven Matz on rehab for one more start August 31.  Matz, recovering from a strained lat muscle, was virtually untouchable in a six inning stint against Erie  August 26.  He gave up just one hit, no runs and retired the last 16 batters he faced. He needed only 56 pitches on what was his fourth overall rehab start.
