DiNapoli says many vets are placed in the state's Medicaid program rather than in federal programs. He says that's because of poor coordination by the state Department of Health and local social services departments.

DiNapoli says veterans "should not be at the mercy of administrative problems" when it comes to learning about the benefits to which they're entitled.

An audit conducted by the comptroller's office turned up dozens of examples where needed referrals were not made for federal benefit.s

DiNapoli says that resulted in limiting health options to veterans while costing state and local taxpayers millions of dollars.
