Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]A Broome County man was sent to jail after police say they discovered he had a weapon while being held in connection with a shoplifting incident at the Johnson City Walmart store.

Authorities say 23-year-old Richard Vanleuven of Johnson City initially was taken into custody for shoplifting at the store on Gannett Drive.

Police say a black pistol-handled folding knife was discovered when Vanleuven was searched.

Vanleuven was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and petit larceny. He was arraigned in Johnson City village court and remanded to Broome County Jail.
