After many years of discussion and debate, a final plan to replace Apalachin's main fire station has been approved.

The Board of Fire Commissioners Thursday night authorized the construction of a new station on the site of the existing facility at 230 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Board chairman Brian Rieber said the existing fire station is scheduled to be demolished in March. Construction on the new building is to begin as soon as the old structure has been torn down.

The new station is expected to be "substantially completed" by next November.

Rieber said the project will cost $2.5 million. Fire district voters approved borrowing that amount more than a year ago. But bids for the first station design came in at about $3.4 million.

Rieber said the project was revised and the station plans were scaled back.

The new station is expected to cost Apalachin Fire District property owners an average of $65 annually for the next 15 years.
