The snow arrived in the Binghamton area early Wednesday and quickly made travel extremely difficult.

Schools around the region canceled classes and many scheduled events were scrapped or postponed because of the storm.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office at the Greater Binghamton Airport said a Winter Storm Warning was scheduled to remain in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Plow crews from the New York State Department of Transportation and local governments struggled to keep streets and highways clear as the snow continued to fall.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder urged people to limit their travel, if possible. He said those who must travel should allow extra time to reach their destination and be sure they had a fully-charged cell phone in case they needed to call for assistance.
