Another black bear sighting is coming from Cortland. But this time officials have opted to leave the bruin alone.

Cortland Police saw the young bear at around 10:30 a.m. May 12 trotting across Pendleton Street.

Nearby schools cancelled outdoor activity for a while as a precaution.

A few weeks ago, a bear in a residential neighborhood climbed up a tree and was shot with a tranquilizer gun by officials with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The bear died a short time later at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Officials say, unfortunately, the tranquilizer dart did not hit the bear as intended and punctured an artery.
