Organizers of the Almost Annual New York State Crappie Derby are crossing their fingers with the hopes of weeks of cold weather so the fishing tournament on Whitney Point can take place.

The Derby has been tentatively set for Saturday, January 25th.

The tournament draws families from across the state and Pennsylvania and features a number of events in addition to the ice fishing competition for the chance to win cash prizes.

The entry fee for the contest is two dollars for anglers over the age of 12.  Children 12 and under can enter free of charge.

The Derby is sponsored by the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Association and the Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Due to the variable of the ice thickness, the Derby has been frequently cancelled. The last contest was in 2011 when the prize purse totaled about 13-thousand, five-hundred dollars.
