The Albany Great Danes edged the Binghamton Bearcats softball team 2-1 this afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex to capture the America East regular season championship.

The Bearcats had taken a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning on a Jessica Bump solo home run.  But the Great Danes used the long ball to their advantage as well as Lauren Alcorn belted a two-run home run to give Albany the lead.  Brittany MacFawn, Albany's starting pitcher, closed the door on the Bearcats over the last two innings to give Albany the victory.

The win gives Albany a final conference record of 15-2 while the Bearcats fall to 14-4.  Next up the Bearcats will host the America East ChampionshipTournament beginning on Thursday.  Albany deferred the home field for the tourney due to field maintenance issues.

Albany will match-up against Stony Brook in opening round play on Thursday at 1 PM while the second-seed Bearcats meet Hartford in a 3:30 PM start.  The tournament is a double-elimination event with the winner getting an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
