Republican Fred Akshar has defeated Democrat Barb Fiala in the race for the 52nd District New York State Senate Seat.  Akshar won by a better than 3-1 margin.  With all but one district reporting Akshar had a wide margin of over 27,000 votes to just over 8,000 for Fiala.

The position fills out the remainder of the term that was served by long-time Republican Thomas Libous.  Libous was accused and convicted of lying to FBI agents and forced to resign his senate seat.

Akshar has been in local law enforcement for a number of years and was believed to have been in line for the Broome County Sheriff's position after current sheriff David Harder retires.  For more on this race and others in the area tune to WNBF First News with Roger Neel and Kathy Whyte beginning at 5:30 AM.
