Broome County Clerk Richard Blythe said the office at 124 Washington Avenue is expected to reopen on Tuesday, July 5.

Blythe said an air conditioning system "meltdown" caused the closure of the office, which is located in space leased by the county.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Blythe said the cooling unit "totally malfunctioned."

The county clerk said the landlord is responsible for repairing the system. He said parts had been ordered for the needed work.

Blythe said although the system might be fixed in time to reopen the office on Friday, it was decided to keep the site closed until after the holiday weekend.

In the meantime, staffing at the Binghamton DMV office has been doubled and Blythe said the wait time there is not "appreciably longer."

The county's lease at the Washington Avenue building runs through the end of the year.

Blythe said the county legislature next month may act on a plan to move the DMV operation to another Washington Avenue site. He said the new location is expected to include space for tax collection operations.
