39 year-old Aaron Powell of Milford Street, Binghamton was arraigned in the Town of Binghamton Court this evening and charged with two counts of murder in the 2nd degree in violation of section 125.25 of the Penal Law.  Powell had been a person of interest in a double-homicide investigation conducted by the Broome County Sheriff's Office and other area law enforcement agencies.

Powell was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail after pleading not guilty to the charges.  The two counts of Murder in the 2nd Degree stem from a double homicide discovered by Broome County Sheriff's personnel on Friday morning March 22nd in a Town of Binghamton home.  The victims were 35 year-old Christina Rumpel Powell and 24 year-old Mario Mascarielli.  Rumpel Powell was the estranged wife of the suspect.

Aaron Powell was arrested this morning as he came out of a convenience store in Montrose, Pa.  Broome County Sheriff David Harder told reporters Powell contacted a family member and a close personal friend shortly after 9:00 AM.  The telephone number he was calling from was traced to the convenience store.  Susquehanna County law enforcement officials located Powell just outside the store and took him into custody without incident.

The 2007 black GMC Yukon Denali was recovered in a remote wooded area near Montrose, Pa.  It was towed to the Pa. State Police Gibson barracks to be processed for additional evidence. The Sheriff's Department is asking anyone who may have seen that vehicle or seen Aaron Powell over the last several days to contact the Broome County Sheriff's Department at 607-778-1911.

Sheriff Harder says the investigation into the two murders is continuing but stated that at this time there is no other suspect in the case.
