Officials are continuing to check the scene of a large brush fire in the Hillcrest area that is being blamed on a passing train.

55 acres were scorched as fire was reported around noon May 9 and some homes were evacuated, but not damaged.

31 fire companies responded and a command center was set up at Chenango Valley High School.

Firefighters attacked the flames from the top of a ridge as winds drove the fire uphill from the railroad tracks.

Water had to be brought into the site.

Crews were on the scene for about ten hours.

Hot spots were still being addressed the following day with firefighters spending about another ten hours putting out dozens of flare-ups.

The train is to be inspected as officials look into exactly what sparked the fire.

There were no reports of injuries.
