New York State Police say a cattle carrier traveling on interstate 81 between Lisle and Marathon caught fire as the fuel tank ruptured, spraying fuel all over the trailer carrying 30 horses. The fuel quickly ignited and there was no way out for the equines.

All 30 horses in the trailer were killed.

The animals were being transported to a rendering plant in Canada.

Officials say the crash and fire was reported at around 7:40 Monday night.

The highway was closed for about two hours before one lane reopened.

Emergency crews left the scene at around 2:50 a.m.

There were no human injuries.

State police said the horses were coming from a location in Pennsylvania and were to be delivered for slaughter in Quebec.
