Twenty-two dogs and one cat are now in safety after being rescued July 9 from horrific conditions in a condemned Endwell home.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Morgan responded to the home on Beckwith Avenue around 2 p.m. July 8 and located over 20 dogs in poor condition in the basement but was unable to get to the dogs due to the air quality.

After the BC Humane Society and Hazardous Materials Teams organized necessary materials, animals were brought out of the house and taken into custody by the Humane Society.

Broome County Sheriff’s investigators say they are still trying to find the owner of the animals. The owner of the house, who had been away from the address, told authorities the animals belonged to a tenant.

Officials on the scene of the rescue say the animals had no access to food, water, fresh air or sanitary conditions for maybe as long as a month and all were suffering various health problems.

The dogs appear to be mainly Shih Tzus but authorities say the situation did not appear to be a breeding operation.

So far no charges have been filed.

The Town Union Code Enforcement office says the home is unlivable due to the conditions inside.

The Humane anticipates it is going to cost several hundred dollars for each animal to be treated for infestations and other problems and to get vaccinated. The group is now asking for donations to help nurse the dogs and the cat back to health so they can be adopted.  Checks can be sent to the Humane Society at 2 Jackson Street, Binghamton, NY 13903.

The shelter could also use items like Pedigree small dog food, Clorox wipes, paper towels, toys as well as canned cat food and cat litter.
